The Game of Chance – Heroes at board games, did Ajax and Archilles see their death?

The Vatican amphora 344, an antique vessel which dates back to 500BCE, is consider by art historians as Exekias' greatest achievement. It has a graphic depiction of Ajax and Achilles playing a board game during the Trojan War.

The depiction holds historical significance in the context of Greek mythology and the Trojan War. In Greek mythology, Ajax and Achilles were both prominent warriors who fought on the side of the Greeks against the Trojans. The board game scene is often interpreted as a representation of their camaraderie and friendship during the war.

The game itself is believed to be a form of ludus latrunculorum, a strategy game popular in ancient Greece. The depiction highlights the idea that even in the midst of war, moments of leisure and bonding were valued. It also serves as a reminder of the humanity and complex relationships that existed among the warriors, beyond their roles as fierce fighters.

The scene may symbolize the contrast between Ajax and Achilles. Known for his physical strength and courage, Ajax represents the traditional warrior archetype, while Achilles, known for his extraordinary abilities and vulnerable heel, embodies the tragic hero.
