Hi! I'm a Year 10 student studying in the UK and I have a great interest in Board Games because of the positive impact that I have observed them having on the people around me and myself.
I began playing board games over the summer break during the COVID lockdowns and found that it was a great way for me to socialise with others and to break the ice when meeting new people (COVID greatly limited the social interactions that I had with peers). Then I did some further research and found that board games have been proven to be extremely beneficial for mental health, promoting face to face interaction and in some cases showing to decrease trauma in patients. (See this article written by the National Library of Medicine: link )
I hope that everyone who comes across this website resonates with my passion and intend on having a positive impact on others through board games and social interaction :)
Update: (Currently Year 11) I have founded my school's first Board Games Society as I wanted to introduce this method of communication to those in my community, knowing that the pandemic had negatively impacted many of my friends and others in the student body. The Board Games Society is currently expanding into the local area through a memory cafe which I will be volunteering at. The Memory cafe is linked to a care home where there are many elderly patients with dementia, which I personally connect to as my Grandfather also has dementia. I am currently making memory cards with pictures of common places around the area, popular desserts and foods, and more to come. The aim of this initiative is so that the patients can play with more mature versions of board games (the ones that are usually played can feel a bit childish and perhaps demeaning to them.) This project will hopefully bring the dementia patients some semblance of normalcy and have an uplifting feeling for them!
