Introducing Secret Hitler!

What is Secret Hitler?

Secret Hitler is a social deduction game that was created by Max Temkin, Mike Boxleiter, and Tommy Maranges. It is set in the 1930s Weimar Republic of Germany and represents the rise of fascism with Adolf Hitler as the secret antagonist. The game can be played by 5-10 people and typically lasts around 45 minutes to an hour.

How do you play?

In Secret Hitler, players are divided into two teams: the Liberals and the Fascists. Among the Fascists, one player is secretly Hitler. The objective for the Liberals is to pass liberal policies and prevent Hitler from ever becoming the Chancellor or passing fascist policies. On the other hand, the Fascists strive to elect Hitler as Chancellor and pass fascist policies to secure their victory. The game is won when either five liberal policies or six fascist policies are enacted, or if Hitler is elected as Chancellor after three fascist policies.

The game progresses through rounds, during which players take turns as the President and Chancellor of the Government. They nominate each other to become Chancellor, and the nominees must be approved by majority vote. Once a Chancellor is elected, they must choose to either pass a policy from a deck (containing liberal and fascist policies) or discard one. These policies shape the game's narrative and directly affect the balance of power.

Throughout the game, players engage in discussion, make deductions, and employ deception to identify the hidden identities of their opponents. The Fascists attempt to disguise their roles, while the Liberals work to deduce the true allegiances of others. Collaboration among Liberals is crucial to thwart Fascist plans, while Fascists rely on deception and manipulation to advance their agenda.

What is its cultural and historical significance?

Regarding its cultural heritage to humankind, Secret Hitler finds its roots in historical events, particularly the rise of fascism in Germany. Although it is a fictional game, it uses elements from this era to create a thought-provoking social experience. By exploring themes of trust, deception, and political ideology, it encourages players to learn from previous historical contexts.

It is worth noting that Secret Hitler is intended for mature audiences and requires players to approach it with respect and understanding. It serves as a reminder of the importance of safeguarding democratic values and the potential consequences of authoritarian regimes.
